Hey Shorty

In this post I mentioned that I'm on the petite side. Like a little over 5 feet with my tallest heels on petite. It can have it's pluses, people always want to help me carry things, and no one ever forgets "the short one." However, when it comes to fashion the list of pros can be pretty short (ha, no pun intended). We are bombarded with images of leggy models looking like fabulous bean poles. Well for most of us that look is not a reality. Some words on who is petite.

"According to the fashion industry Petite is defined as 5′5″ inches tall and under. In the United States petite women represent 70% of the female population. The average height of a U.S. female is 5’3″.  There are approximately a hundred million petite women that are categorized as fit, curvy and plus-sized domestically. "(source)

Luckily I found Bella Petite magazine about a year ago. At the time they were under major construction but they have now relaunched and have a preview issue up on their site. They cover health and fitness, fashion and shopping, lifestyle, and offer an outlet for petite models. The editor-and-chief also hosts a weekly podcast. Here is a little on their mission.

"Bella Petite’s objective is to create a high-quality fashion forward web community and publication. Featuring innovative content, while promoting the petite woman’s image to the mainstream media and creating real solutions for petite women in fashion.
Our goal is to enrich the lives of petite women by expanding the opportunities in the fashion, modeling, beauty and the business world. At the same time we are breaking down the negative stereotypes about height, body style and age. It’s time the fashion industry takes notice and welcomes all women to enjoy fashion!  And it is time petite women are represented in a positive fashion and establish market place identity in the fashion industry." I'm really excited about this magazine and I've already learned some great fitness tips! Check it out and let me know what you think!

Beyonce is FLY

Things that are really happening.

A newly discovered horse fly in Australia was so "bootylicious" with its golden-haired bum, there was only one name worthy of its beauty: Beyonce. He says he wanted to pay respect to the insect's beauty by naming it Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.
Bryan Lessard, a 24-year-old researcher at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization named the new species. Lessard said Beyonce would be "in the nature history books forever" and that the fly now bearing her name is "pretty bootylicious" with its golden backside. Lessard says he hasn't heard from Beyonce, who recently gave birth to her first child, but he is a fan and hopes she will take his scientific gesture as a compliment. Well there you have it. Now she really has everything!

NYC life

"Rats in New York subways are kind of like birds in the sky or fish in the ocean. We just expect them to be there, and if for some reason they're not, it's kind of worrisome — like, a check-the doomsday-clock kind of worrisome. Transit employees, however, are understandably fed up with these furry, long-tailed co-workers.

Jim Gannon, a TWU Local 100 spokesman, sums up their frustration best when he eloquently says "Who the hell wants to work around hundreds of freaking rats?" Amen, brother. In an effort to get the MTA to hire more staff to help keep the rodent population at bay, workers have organized the "Rate My Rat" photo contest, where commuters can upload pics they've taken of subway rats, and then users can rate the rats on a scale that ranges from "handsome" to "beastly." (Warning: There are some graphic images of dead rats involved here.)
Whoever submits the picture that is voted to be the "nastiest" will win an unlimited monthly transit pass, which, frankly, is one hell of an awesome prize, but then again it also means you might be spending more time taking the subway with, you guessed it, a whole bunch of rats. Although we're not sure if the rat voted "most dapper" wins anything, we hope, at least, that there is a reality show contract in his or her near future."(via Refinery29)

Only in New York City would this be a real thing.

Sharing is Caring

Some things I've found in my internet travels that I thought worthy a share.

"Bitches Gotta Eat"
This hilarious blog written by Samantha Irby is really the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I feel like she is my best friend and clearly knows all my inner thoughts. Be warned she uses a lot of colorful language, if you're offended by kinda thing this isn't for you. Here's a quick snippet of her latest entry.

i don't make resolutions because fuck that. my general operating system is "i'm perfect. why change?" and so far i've been pretty successful staying the goddamned same and getting rid of anything or anyone who finds himself unhappy with who that person happens to be. and at first that shit sounds unreasonable, but it really is the most realistic way to get through life. FOR ALL OF US. if you're a toxic fucking asshole, chances are that's how you'll remain unless a deathbed conversion forces you to get with the goddamned program. and that's fine, because there are plenty of damaged bitches with low self-esteem who hate themselves enough to keep your shitty ass around. and that works for the rest of us, too. change is hard, so instead of trying to be nice or thin or smart if the shit doesn't come naturally to you then fuck that. be mean and fat and dumb and find some motherfuckers who can deal with that shit.

I'm her new biggest fan and you will be too. Check her out Here.

Kiyonna
As a super petite person I understand the trial and tribulations of finding clothes that work on a body not considered "standard." I have long dreamed of creating clothes for women in need of special sizes. Tall, short, curvy, etc. Well someone has taken care of curvy. Kiyonna is a California based boutique with an online version that offers super cute clothing for women sizes 10 to 32. Including wedding gowns and swimwear. For some of the items they even feature pictures of real women of different sizes modeling the clothes. This is a brilliant idea that frankly all online retailers should employ. Some pictures if you please.

Convention

A little off fashion today but hey, there is more to the world.....

This article sparked a healthy debate on marriage and our ideals amongst my friends. Here's a quick excerpt for all you lazy bones out there.

"Because our lives are not focused on survival, we often have two strong individuals with unique outlooks building a life together. And that's where the challenges start. Since we're exposed to so much now, we get bored much easier and need something to keep the spark alive and to keep the relationship well-rounded. So it's about finding a way to stay attracted to the other person and to continue to be satisfied intellectually, emotionally, and sexually in the relationships. While some couples do manage to stay together despite these challenges, as the world gets more and more complicated, so too will the traditional marriage model.

For example, my television producer husband and I live four blocks away from each other. We're independent yet we love each other and have a happy and successful marriage in a city (Hollywood) where the divorce rate is high. Even though we're highly compatible on many levels, we have different lifestyle preferences. I'm a neat freak; he's a collector who doesn't mind clutter. I'm a social person who enjoys frequent entertaining; he prefers to have quiet one-on-one time with someone. While these differences may seem trivial, often it's the little things in a relationship -- the small annoyances -- that drive people apart. Having an unconventional marriage can help eliminate some of the common relationship killers."
Some of us could see the benefits, others thought it was a terrible idea. One friend felt it spoke to compatibility. What are your thoughts on marriage? Do you think living separately would be a benefit or do want your partner by your side at night?

Korto

Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut • Toe – Mo • Mo • Lu) was born in Monrovia, Liberia and lived there until 1990. The family moved to Canada where Korto pursued her passion and studied fashion design at the L’Academies des Couturiers Design Institute in Ottawa, Ontario.  After graduating she moved to Arkansas with her husband to live and raise their daughter. After working as an independent fashion designer and continuing her education at Parsons School of Design, Korto followed her dreams and won a place on the 5th season of Bravo TV’s hit show Project Runway.  Throughout the show, Korto stood out as a designer who embraced color and diversity and displayed such extraordinary talent that she was awarded the fan favorite prize. During the season finale of Project Runway, Korto presented her spring 2009 collection at Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week and ultimately ended the season as 1st runner up.
From Korto's website
Korto was always one of my favorites on Project Runway. She wasn’t afraid to use bright colors, her styling was always great, and she seemed like a genuinely nice person. What I liked most about her were her accessories. She made them herself and they were always so bold. Here’s some of her work from Project Runway and beyond. Enjoy!

Now jaunt off to the shop and pick yourself up something yummy!
